Like many big projects with a community remit Dorney Lake's doors are always open, not only to site users of all kinds but also to those who are interested in becoming involved in this unique facility. Here's how:
Junior Officials Scheme
This allow young people aged 13 to 19 from schools and boat clubs using Dorney Lake to have a hands-on part, if not competing, in major sporting events here.
In 2005, when we hosted two internationals - the first of three regattas for the BearingPoint Rowing World Cup 2005 and the Coupe de la Jeunesse - nearly 100 young volunteers were trained to act as stewards and in other capacities. This time some 50 were selected to take part and they all loved it. They put in over 1,300 hours, an outstanding contribution, and were rewarded at a special Awards Evening in October with certificates issued by GB medal-winners Andy Hodge and Elise Laverick. Fast, fun and fantastic is, we can safely say, how the young helpers would sum up their 'officialdom'.
Please contact Nigel Weare, Community & Aquatics Development Adviser, on 01753 832756 if you would like to hear more or contact us via email.
Volunteer Wardens
We are looking for walkers, nature-lovers and community project supporters of all ages to help Lake Warden Adam Clift, Ranger Paul Oatway and Assistant Ranger Steve Hopkins-Young with a number of activities. These could be gently patrolling to ensure our minimal guidelines are followed, manning an information post near the site entrance at weekends and in holiday periods, taking trail groups or giving talks. Training and information would of course be given. We would be delighted to hear from you, whether you have special skills to offer or are just plain enthusiastic. Roderick Watson, Special Projects Adviser to Eton College, is the person to contact on 01753 832756 or contact us via email.
Donate a Tree
Dorney Lake's beautiful Arboretum, containing over 30,000 specially planted trees, is often now used by well-wishers or those seeking to mark a special occasion or to commemorate a family member or friend through the donation of a tree or even a group of trees. In 2005 for instance many spring-flowering cherry trees have been given to the Lake. All trees, including those donated, are registered on a database.
A list of Arboretum trees and those which would be welcome additions will be shown at the end of this section. If you are a UK tax-payer, Gift Aid will enhance the value of your gift even further. Please get in touch with Roderick Watson as above.
A Lake Legacy
Many people leave gifts to charity in their wills. Such generosity is particularly effective since it is tax-exempt so your chosen charity receives the full benefit of your kindness.
You may be sure, if considering Dorney Lake Trust, a Registered Charity, for a bequest, that the amount would be put to very good use for the benefit of the young people and all other community members who use Dorney Lake's wonderful, all-round facilities. Roderick Watson, as above, will be delighted to discuss your wishes with you.
